BURNIN ERROR MESSAGES
=====================
INTRODUCTION
============
If there's something wrong with your system, you'll find
error numbers listed in your BURNIN.LOG file, which you can
read from the Utilities menu. Not all errors mean that
something is wrong with your hardware, but here's a list of
the most common messages you're likely to see.
Not all errors allow BurnIn to continue to run. Some errors
are fatal, and don't allow writing to the BURNIN.LOG file.
These are DOS errors, and are beyond the scope of this
summary, aside from the few descrived at the end of this
file. If the program dies, leaving you with a cryptic DOS
error number, consult your DOS manual for more information
about the reason for the error, or consult your dealer.
A USER ERROR
============
If you see this on your screen:
Insert disk for drive ?:
Press any key to continue
it means that you've specified a LOGICAL drive in your file
list. You can't do that with BurnIn. What's a LOGICAL drive?
It's either drive B: on PCs with one floppy drive, or a
drive created with DRIVER.SYS in DOS version 3.x. Since DOS
always asks for a disk, each time the drive is called,
BurnIn can't cope with these drive designations. Simply
click on that drive under the Drive menu to disable it.
Here are the other errors, by number:
ERROR 5
This indicates an internal error within BurnIn. If you see
this error, contact the author as soon as possible so he can
correct the problem.
ERROR 7
Out of memory. There is not enough memory available for
BurnIn to perform its routines. Try removing any memory-
resident (TSR) programs you have installed.
ERROR 25
This error may occur if your printer is turned off or if it
is OFF LINE. Correct by putting the printer on line, or by
turning off the printer test option.
ERROR 53
The file BurnIn needs cannot be found. See ERROR 64 for more
information.
ERROR 57
This error indicates that the device being written to had an
input/output (I/O) error. The program cannot recover from
this error, which will appear on your screen, rather than in
the BURNIN.LOG file.
ERROR 61
This error means that the disk you're using is full, or
doesn't have enough space to allow BurnIn to write data
files to it. If this occurs while working with a hard disk,
you may have more than the 127 files allowed on the hard
disk's root directory. Remove some files, then try again.
ERROR 64
This error means that a file which BurnIn was trying to load
could not be found. Check your program to make sure you have
set the correct Path for BurnIn's data files. You can also
use the DOS SET command before running BurnIn to set this
information.
ERROR 67
Too many files in the directory being written to. Reduce the
number of files, or change directories on the drive in
question.
ERROR 68
This indicates that the device being tested either is off
line or does not exist. Correct and retry.
ERROR 70
The disk being written to is write-protected. Remove the
write-protect tab, or move the write-protect button, then
try again.
ERROR 71
The floppy disk drive indicated has its door open or there
is no diskette in the drive. Correct before repeating the
test.
ERROR 72
The program has found a flaw on the disk being written to.
If it's a floppy disk, insert a fresh, formatted disk in the
drive. If it's a hard disk, you may have a bad spot on the
disk. Back up your data, then do a fresh low-level format on
the disk. WARNING: DO NOT FORMAT YOUR DISK WITHOUT A
COMPLETE BACKUP. ALL DATA WILL BE DESTROYED!
ERROR 76
BurnIn can't find the file it needs, due to incorrect path
information. If you've used the SET command to establish a
path for BurnIn data files, check your typing.
DOS ERRORS
==========
While I can't give you information on all DOS errors, here
are a few you may see if your computer is sick. NOTE: Exact
wording of these messages may vary between DOS versions.
PARITY ERROR
This error means that there is a problem with your PC's
memory. You must correct this error before proceeding. See
your dealer.
SEEK ERROR DRIVE ?:
This is an error that indicates that your hard disk is
seriously ill. See your dealer or use a hard disk diagnosis
program.
DRIVE ?: NOT READY
You don't want to see this error. It means that your PC
simply doesn't recognize your hard disk at all. Contact your
dealer or a certified technician.
